Doc Savage! Now With Fan Art!Feb 24, 10
 We've finally added some fan art to the Doc Savage Library. Be sure to check out the contributions of Jerod Blayney and Karyn Anderson in the Image Gallery (under Multimedia on the menu bar) and prepare yourself for some astounding images! Jerod uses his distinctive photo-collage technique (seen at the Captain America Library) to team Doc with Indiana Jones, while Karyn provides a fine portrait of Doc and the aides. Amazing!
And remember, only one week until FIRST WAVE!

DC continues to cater to Doc Savage fans: first there was BATMAN/DOC SAVAGE returning our hero to the land of comics once more. Then the announcement of the new miniseries FIRST WAVE (starting March 3) and now it is revealed that there will be a new DOC SAVAGE solo series for the first time since 1995! The writer will be Paul Malmont, author of that Doc Savage/Shadow/pulp homage The Chinatown Death-Cloud Peril, and art wil be by Howard Porter (JLA) and Art Thibert (X-MEN, ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN). First issue goes on sale April 14!
And I hope to have a real "Upcoming Comics" section on this site soon. Who knew Doc would be back?

A big surprise for the new year: DC is again publishing Doc Savage comics!
Took me completely by surprise: BATMAN/DOC SAVAGE SPECIAL #1 was released in November (with a January cover date) but I only heard about it last week. Fortunately my local comics shop has a copy on the shelf and I snapped it up and read it.
It's the prelude to a new miniseries called FIRST WAVE written by Brian Azzarello, positing an alternate universe in which pulp adventurers, not superheroes, protect the world.
In this issue, Doc Savage comes to Gotham City; his mission: to track down the masked vigilante known as--the Batman!
A fuller synopsis and review will appear over the weekend, but rejoice! After a 15 year hiatus, Doc Savage is back in the comics!
(And I resolve to be more on top of this sort of thing from now on. Really)

Sippo who likes to delve into the scientific backgrounds of the Doc Savage sagas, examining gadgets, superweapons and settings for scientific accuracy as well as tackling continuity problems. DC has announced that they are releasing Doc Savage: The Silver Pyramid (a collected edition of their original 1988 miniseries) on January 19. Amazon has it listed here

I've added a little something to the section for the 1934 Doc Savage radio show: one-line summaries of the plots of each episode. Now you can get an idea of the type of cases faced by the Man of Bronze when limited to fifteen minutes of action per week. Thanks to reader David Gunn for the suggestion!

Ain't It Cool News is reporting that Shane Black (best known for Lethal Weapon) is writing the screenplay for a Doc Savage movie to be produced by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (who did the recent big-screen Star Trek film and TV's Alias and Fringe).
Will this come to pass? Maybe, these guys have the clout. Will it be any good? That remains to be seen.

A Triple ObitJul 18, 09
Apologies for the long delay since the last update: the radio/book sections are taking longer than anticipated. In the meantime, I'm supplying write-ups to our sister site, the Captain America Library (see the link at right).
Here are notices of the passings of three figures associated with Doc Savage:
First is Philip Jose Farmer: the great science fiction writer died on February 25 at the age of 91. The celebrated author of the Riverworld series was a major fan of the Man of Bronze and wrote the literary study Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life, the controversial pastiche A Feast Unknown and Escape from Loki, the first new Doc novel since the end of the pulps. He is also the creator of the sprawling Wold-Newton Universe, which ties all the great heroes of fiction together into one complex family tree.
Second is Edd Cartier, the pulp artist who passed away on December 25, 2008 at 94. Best known for his interior illustrations for The Shadow, he also drew the cover for the March 1948 issue of Doc Savage. Sadly it was one of those strange late covers that did not feature the Man of Bronze!
Finally, Frank Springer, the Marvel Comics artist died on April 2, at 79. Best known for his work on Dazzler and Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD, around these parts he is celebrated as the inker of Marvel’s color Doc Savage comic book issue 7.
Let's Hear It for...Captain America!May 18, 09
The Doc Savage Library and the Incredible Hulk Library have a new friend site: the Captain America Library! Just launched on May 1, the site will contain all the profiles and comics issues featuring the Star-Spangled Avenger, following the pattern of its two predecessors. Julio and I will be adding material to Cap's library for a while, so check it out by clicking on the link at the upper right (look for the red, white and blue).
PS The radio and book sections for Doc Savage will be along eventually. Honest.

Did you know there have been three Doc Savage radio series, in the 1930s, the 1940s and 1985? Well, coming soon, a section covering Doc Savage's exploits on the airwaves, to be added to the multimedia pages. Watch for it (an odd choice of words for radio, I know)!
Plus, while waiting for the Books section to be added, I'm doing another proofreading of the site because no matter how many times I look at what I've written, I never seem to catch every dumb little typo I've made. And, as per Julio's suggestion, I'm putting names in bold type, which he assures me will result in higher visibility on the search engines.

It's a sad milestone for Doc Savage fans: Lester Dent, the primary writer for the original pulp series, passed away fifty years ago today. In his memory I've added a brief biography to the creators page, which is only fitting since it's his picture at the top of the column. As I said, without him, this site would not exist.

In the meantime, have a look at his other major project: as Julio Molina-Muscara, he is the artist for a comic book miniseries called OMEGA CHASE, written by Keith Dallas. It's a zombie western with science fiction elements, or a zombie sci-fi tale with western elements, or maybe a sci-fi western with zombie elements. Anyway, it's terrific, and issue 3 (of 4) has just been released. Check it out at Th3rd World Studios http://www.th3rdworld.com/ and add it to your collection.

Doc Savage's final comic book appearances to date were in the Dark Horse miniseries Doc Savage: the Curse of the Fire God, in which the Man of Bronze travels to South America to rescue his cousin Pat from the clutches of a bad-tempered native deity. Burning with curiosity? Well, I won't quench the flame. The hot details are available on issues 1, 2, 3, and 4, as of this Fry-day. Singe you're already steamed over all the "hot" puns, I'll take the heat off you before I'm toast.
What's next? Not to worry, the pulp novels are still on the way.
News from the End of the MillenniumNov 15, 08
...Millennium Comics, that is. This week I've added the final issues from Millennium's run on Doc Savage, and an unusual set they are.
First up, there was Doc Savage, the Manual of Bronze, a book-length answer to the question, "Who is Doc Savage?" with character profiles and artwork. You can get the details here.
Then there was Pat Savage, Woman of Bronze, an unprecedented (at least in the comics) solo adventure for Doc's knockout of a cousin. The details on this one are here.
Finally, Millennium ended its run with the sadly curtailed Repel, their sole effort at adapting one of the original pulp novels. It held a lot of promise and the post-mortem is here.

This site started out dedicated to Doc Savage's comic book appearances, but it always seemed a bit misleading that something called "The Doc Savage Library" didn't have a section for the original pulp novels. Which, after all, is where Doc Savage started.
So...coming soon, this site will feature the pulps in all their glorious, er, pulpness (pulpitude?). When I'm done adding the comics issues, I hope to begin adding entries for each of the 182 pulp novels, plus the additions, pastiches, reference works, and anything else that seems appropriate to a library devoted to Doc Savage. Watch for it!

The Prequel, you ask? Millennium Comics' third Doc Savage miniseries was billed as the "First Supersaga," a tale of Asian gangsters and Hindu gods that takes place immediately before the first recorded adventure THE MAN OF BRONZE. This three part tale found in DC's Doc Savage 22, 23, and 24 was the climax of their series featuring the Man of Bronze, and now all the issues of their run are on display at The Doc Savage Library.

Look, Up in the Sky...!Sep 27, 08
No, not him--that other Clark guy--it's the Air Lord, the latest menace to confront the Man of Bronze, with his scheme to dominate the world's airlines! A nice 1930s three-parter from DC with amazing art by Wigham and Montano, who show themselves masters of drawing aircraft, and it's now here in DC's Doc Savage 19, 20, and 21. The Hindenburg Disaster is recreated spectacularly and compassionately--no mean feat.
The Shadow Knows!Aug 30, 08
The historic first teaming of those two giants of the hero pulps--Doc Savage and the Shadow--took place in the pages of DC comics in 1990. They did it in a crossover between their Doc and Shadow titles and you can read about it here: The Shadow Strikes 5, Doc Savage 17, Shadow 6 and Doc 18.
And while we're on the subject: the second historic first teaming of the two heroes was done by Dark Horse in their miniseries The Shadow and Doc Savage 1 & 2.
Will there be a third historic first teaming? Only the Shadow knows!

 I've just added the write-ups for DC's Doc Savage issues 9-14, which includes the "Sunlight Rising!" story arc--the long-anticipated return of Doc's greatest archenemy John Sunlight.
And by way of comparison, I've also put in Millennium's first Doc miniseries, with its take on the return of John Sunlight, in the four-part "Monarch of Armageddon!"
